Operating System: Mac OS
GIMP Experience: Experienced User

Greetings,
I recently upgraded my macOS to Catalina 10.15.5 and after that GIMP was not working properly, not being able to access certain directories -- most annoying. I thought perhaps I needed up to update GIMP. So, I removed the old version 2.10.8 and installed the new version 2.10.20. The install and adding GIMP to the Applications folder all seemed to go well -- but when I started GIMP it did not open.
So, I removed the new version and reinstalled the old version. It, too, will now not open. I checked my process table and see it is running:
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD %CPU %MEM ARGS
502 2105 1 0 6:33AM ?? 0:00.00 /Applications/GI 0.0 0.0 /Applications/GIMP-2.10.app/Contents/MacOS/gimp -psn_0_536707
but the GUI never appears (this process has been running for over an hour now).
I checked my security settings and see that 'Allow apps and downloaded from:', 'App Store and indentifed developers' is selected.
Any ideas on how to get this working again?
Thanks,
Brian

GIMP has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. Gimp ⽇本語 macos catalina Until GIMP 2.10.8, some japaneseization was incomplete. Most of the filters I used often stayed in English. I've been using GIMP for a long time, but it's been a huge improvement since 2.10. In the old days, when System 7 was not translated into Japanese for a. So were betas of ios 13. And it was so bad that 13.1 had to be rushed out five days later, followed almost immediately by 13.1.1, which in turn was followed by 13.1.2, and all of this in the last month. Meanwhile, catalina seems to have broken a lot of things, many photo-related. OS X: GIMP is a fantastic free alternative to Photoshop for all desktop operating systems, but on Mac it was a bit of a pain to set it up, because you needed to install X11. Gimp now, however.

Hello, Hopefully someone can walk me through this, This is a brand new MacBookand when setting it up it went into a Catalina update and here I am.. I've gotthe GIMP 2.10 installer on my desktop, I right click on it, a windows opens withGIMP 2.10.app, and that's as far as I get. I 'open' the the GIMP-2.10.app andnothing, I don't wind up with a GIMP app and literally nothing happens. No appin launchpad or finder. Greatly appreciate help!

Unless things have changed drastically in Catalina (and from what I read, they may have, and not for the better), you need to left click on the installer and when it opens drag the resulting icon onto your desktop, after which you'll get a warning about it coming from a non-Apple source and so on. Tell it to install anyway. Whereupon it will install. Or should, anyway -- Catalina seems to have broken several things, including some photo-related ones.

Yes. Open GIMP; also if you cannot access e.g. Desktop files with the File → Open dialog, you can drag a Desktop file icon to the GIMP window to open it.

This is a fault of the GIMP (GTK?) File → Open dialog; in MacOS, if you try to access a “protected' directory (Downloads, Documents, Desktop, …) a requester *should* *open*, asking if you want to give your program full disk access, and transferring you to System Preferences → Security & Privacy when answering “OK”. Please, change this behaviour.

And, for what concerns the issue 'dragging the GIMP icon to the Applications directory', just dragging under MacOS on the same volume creates in Applications a soft link to the executable. If you want *move* the whole executable to Applications, use Command-Drag instead.
